Google Gears on Firefox 3 (Mac), anyone got it to work?
Has anyone gotten Google Gears to work on Firefox Mac?
‘Cuz I sure can’t get it to work. Which is a real bummer. The WordPress admin is many times faster in Safari with Gears running.
I have it installed correctly in Firefox. The Google page tells me so:

"Gears is installed"
And the Addons window agrees. But notice the Preferences button is greyed out.

So it all looks good so far. I go to enable Turbo in the WordPress admin. And am greeted with:

"Gears is installed on this computer, but is not enabled for use with WordPress."
OK no reason to be alarmed. I did install Gears but maybe it’s not enabled. So I click that button. Then I get:

"Your browser’s settings do not permit this website to use Google Gears."
So I obey again. I try to change the settings by using the Tools menu. Notice all other addons are disabled.

When I do that, nothing happens. No window. No messages. Nothing.
Has anyone come across this before? Is there a fix or workaround? Thanks in advance!

Did you do that on gmail? :
1. Click Settings and click the Labs tab.
2. Select Enable next to Offline Gmail.
3. Click Save Changes.
4. After your browser reloads, you’ll see a new “Offline0.1″ link in the upper righthand corner of your account, next to your username. Click this link to start the offline set up process and download Gears if you don’t already have it.

Thanks so much for trying to help. I did give it a go but I get the same errors: http://www.webveteran.com/blog/index.php/uncategorized/update-google-gears-on-firefox-3-mac-anyone-got-it-to-work/
I get the same issue in Windows with Firefox. It seems to freeze up, but when I alt-tab between windows, I see that the Gears pop-up has opened, but I cannot alt-tab through to select it. Only by holding down alt-tab can I read it.
I tried on Firefox with a lot fewer extensions, and it worked. So I guess one or more of my extensions are not playing nice. But even when I disabled *all* extensions, it still wouldn’t work on mine… Happening in both Vista and XP…
@Edward
Hm. Based on that I used DragThing’s window palette, which shows every open window. Accessing Google Gears settings in Safari shows up in that window palette. But doing the same in Firefox does not. So, on the Mac at least, I don’t think the gears settings window is created at all.
I’m having the same issue on FF3 on Vista, any workaround that you found? When I go to Tools…Gears Settings the browser acts like there is an active dialog (clicking anywhere makes a beeping noise) but I cannot see anything anywhere. Pressing ESC gets out of that mode and allows me to use the browser again. The same happens when I go to a site that supports Gears, it’ll display the “allow this site to use gears” dialog but of course I can’t actually see it, all I can do is press ESC to close the dialog and not allow the site to use gears.
Nope, no progress with this on my end. I gave up trying though. This is very weak of Mozilla and Google. If they can’t get something to work, humanity is doomed!

It’s because of themes. Switch to the default Firefox theme and it will work fine.
@Vijay
I was so happy to hear your comment and try it out. But, it turns out I am already using the default theme. I dodn’t even have any other themes installed.
I had the same problem which turned out to be caused by WordPress Turbo and Google Gears not supporting IDN domains. That’s probably not the cause of your problem, but you could try modifying the “wp-gears.js” file in your wp-admin/js folder, uncomment the google.gears.factory.getPermission call in the getPermission method. That at least opened to dialog that allowed me to approve the site.
@Nils-H
Thanks for trying to help. I did as you instructed but it still does not work. Firefox will not open the dialog at all – regardless of what site I have open.
same problem here, win xp and ff 3.0.10
switch to default theme worked for me and could enable gears successfully
thanks guys!
Hey, I used Firefox on Windows, but with an extension (theme) to make it have a Mac appearance, and it block google gears.
When I disable it, the gears work just fine
May be there is something wrong with Mac settings
